THE END GAME FOR FOSSIL GAS

THE END GAME FOR FOSSIL GAS: How to make World Bank Development Policy Finance align with the Paris Agreement is a report by Recourse that features case studies on gas expansion projects in Bangladesh and Senegal. The report pushes back on the World Banks claim that gas is a clean and transitional fossil fuel. In fact, in Bangladesh the increased reliance on imported Liquefied Natural Gas, combined with very low domestic renewable generation, has left Bangladesh highly vulnerable to energy shortages and blackouts.

Bhekumuzi Dean Bhebhe of Don’t Gas Africa explains: “Continued investment in gas infrastructure is a dangerous and short-sighted ambition that contributes to the worsening impacts of the climate emergency, which disproportionately affects vulnerable communities in developing countries. The World Bank’s continued support for gas infrastructure in countries like Senegal and Bangladesh through DPF is incompatible with Africa’s current and future energy needs.”
