The gas industry and its apologists come in many forms, but they all share one goal: keeping Africa locked into dirty energy while they profit. We’ve identified six types of Fossil Fools, their tactics, and how to counter their misleading arguments with the truth.
1 . The "Gas is Clean" Clown
Characteristics: They’ll tell you gas is a "clean transition fuel."
The reality: Methane from gas is 80x worse than CO₂ over 20 years. If it’s so clean, why are frontline communities fighting deadly air pollution?
2 . The "Energy Poverty Savior"
Characteristics: They pretend gas will lift Africa out of poverty. Meanwhile, 600M Africans still lack electricity despite decades of fossil fuel projects.
The reality: Who's really getting rich? (Hint: It's not the people.)
3 . The "We Need Both" Spin Doctor
Characteristics: “We need gas AND renewables,” they say.
The reality: Funding gas delays clean energy and locks Africa into decades of pollution. If they were serious about a just transition, they’d put money where their mouth is.
4 . The "Foreign Investment Fan"
Characteristics: Thinks gas deals bring economic growth.
The reality: Never mentions how multinationals extract resources, export profits, and leave behind pollution and displacement.
As for the money? Well, it’s not staying in Africa.
5 . The "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs" Deceiver
Characteristics: Says gas creates jobs.
The reality: Most gas projects rely on imported labor. Meanwhile, renewable energy creates more jobs per dollar and secures Africa’s energy independence.
6 . The "Activists Are the Problem" Gaslighter
Characteristics: Blames climate activists for Africa’s struggles but stays silent when oil spills, gas flaring, and displacement destroy communities.
The reality: Who’s really standing with the people? We know we are.
