Examples of the European Dash for Gas in Africa
Statements from EU leaders supporting new gas:
In May 2022, Scholz visited Senegal to pursue new projects there
In October 2022, Scholz's chief of staff said Germany should finance exploration of gas fields
Germany made attempts at the European Council to get EU states to support gas extraction.
In September, EU’s foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell encouraged the Mozambique government to accelerate a gas programme which has led to the displacement of thousands and the fuelling of violent insurgency and conflict.
Deals between EU and Africa:
EU - Egypt/Israel: Egypt agreed to provide its LNG infra for gas export from Egypt & Israel to the EU (though non-discriminatory use for exports to other markets too). This would see gas flow beyond 2030.
Italy - Angola deal: Italian government signed a declaration of intent with Angola to develop "new" natural gas ventures and to increase exports to Italy.
Italy’s Eni - Republic of Congo deal: the deal involved participation of Italian and Congan governments (Italian government owns 1/3rd of Eni).
France and Italy continue to support LNG projects in Mozambique despite the project driving conflict in the region
